Sammy Alaoui Harouni is a self-taught mixed-media artist born in Marrakech, Morocco, and raised in the United States. His work emerges from the enduring imprint of Moroccan culture: the saturated colors, rhythmic movement, intricate pattern, and layered visual energy of Marrakech, especially the performers and public life of Jemaa el-Fnaa square. These early encounters remain active in his practice, shaping not only what he sees but how he constructs an image through accumulation, repetition, contrast, and gesture. Working intuitively, Sammy combines watercolor, acrylic, ink, pencil, pastel, paper, and stenciled elements to create richly layered surfaces. He moves between brushes and his hands, allowing pigment, texture, and line to gather like fragments of memory. Abstract fields meet human figures and symbolic forms, echoing the coexistence of spectacle, storytelling, ornament, and movement that defines his Moroccan visual inheritance. Rather than imposing a fixed image, he lets each composition unfold through a responsive process in which color and gesture carry emotional and cultural resonance. His influences include Picasso’s fragmented forms, Matisse’s use of color and pattern, Magritte’s exploration of perception, and Dalí’s surreal imagery. Seurat’s treatment of light and color and Pollock’s gestural approach also inform his work. Sammy absorbs these histories while filtering them through his own experience between Morocco and the United States, developing a visual language that is at once abstract, tactile, and deeply personal. His paintings inhabit the space between recognition and abstraction. Figures emerge and recede within fields of color and texture, inviting viewers to encounter the work as both image and atmosphere. In this shifting space, Harouni transforms memory, heritage, and sensation into compositions that remain open to multiple readings.
