About Sammy
Sammy is a self taught artist, born in Marrakech, Morocco, and raised in the United States. His work is deeply shaped by the vibrant energy of his early surroundings especially the colors, rhythms, and textures of Marrakech street life. The performers, patterns, and constant movement of iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square played a big role in forming his early visual language.He considers himself lucky to be surrounded by artist friends, including his wife. Without their support, he might never have discovered painting. It started casually just sketching on scraps of paper during free time. Those early drawings caught the attention of friends, and their encouragement pushed him to explore further.At the time, Sammy didn’t even know what “mixed media” meant. The idea that you could combine watercolor, acrylic, ink, pastels, and other materials in one piece was completely new. He learned it slowly, with their help, experimenting along the way. Without formal training, Sammy developed a process rooted in instinct. He draws with pencil, blends pastels, paints with both brush and hands, and layers paper and pstencils. Anything that speaks in the moment becomes part of the work. His paintings blend abstraction with human presence and symbolic references.He’s inspired by artists like Picasso for their bold forms, Matisse for simplicity and pattern, Seurat for light and color, and Pollock for physicality and improvisation.We invite you to explore his gallery.
